Materials & Processes Engineer – NASA Human Lander System
Location: Onsite at Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, AL
Contract: ESSCA, in support of NASA
Join the mission to return humans to the Moon and take the first steps toward Mars. This role supports NASA’s Human Lander System (HLS) program, contributing directly to spacecraft that will shape the future of human space exploration.
As a Materials & Processes Engineer, you will be at the forefront of innovation—partnering with NASA experts, commercial providers, and industry-leading engineers to ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of the next-generation human landers.

As a Materials & Processes Engineer, you will be at the forefront of innovation—partnering with NASA experts, commercial providers, and industry-leading engineers to ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of the next-generation human landers.
What You’ll Do
Program Coordination & Compliance
- Collaborate across commercial and NASA programs.
- Ensure adherence to NASA regulations and standards.
- Build strong professional relationships with NASA customers, contractors, and HLS partners.
Systems Development & Safety
- Contribute to the safety and reliability of lunar lander systems.
- Participate in mission planning and spacecraft integrity reviews.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks, review hazard analyses, and assess safety documentation.
- Conduct evaluations on materials and processes for R&D, manufacturing, and flight systems.
- Review manufacturing techniques: forging, forming, welding, joining, surface treatments, corrosion prevention, and more.
- Recommend and oversee testing protocols to verify compliance.
- Contribute to milestone reviews including PDR, CDR, DCR, COFR, and Certification Baseline Reviews.
Team Collaboration & Communication
- Work in a dynamic, cross-disciplinary team of engineers and specialists.
- Provide updates, meeting summaries, and status reports.
- Contribute to collective problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering or related field.
Experience:
- Bachelor’s + 15–20 years, OR
- Master’s + 13+ years, OR
- PhD + 9+ years.
Preferred Experience:
- Direct work with NASA programs and regulations.
- Background in aerospace materials & processes.
- Knowledge of human-rated spacecraft systems.
- Familiarity with structural testing methodologies and NASA milestone review processes.
- Experience with task tracking systems (e.g., JIRA, Confluence).
