Project Engineer - Rugged Military Electronics & Embedded Systems

Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to lead the technical execution of complex engineering programs involving rugged military electronics, embedded computing systems, and automated test equipment (ATE).
This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an engineer who can see the big picture while still getting into the details when necessary. You will bring together electrical, mechanical, software, test, and systems engineering disciplines to solve challenging technical problems and deliver reliable systems for demanding defense applications.
As the technical lead for assigned projects, you will work directly with customers and engineering teams to translate requirements into practical solutions, guide system architecture and integration, manage technical risks, and drive projects from initial requirements through design, integration, verification, and delivery.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical lead for multidisciplinary engineering projects, coordinating activities across electrical, mechanical, software, systems, and test engineering.
- Translate customer requirements, mission objectives, and technical constraints into actionable engineering requirements, plans, and system-level solutions.
- Lead system architecture development, design trade studies, subsystem integration, and key technical decisions throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure engineering solutions meet applicable functional, performance, reliability, and environmental requirements for ruggedized and military-grade systems.
- Coordinate technical execution from initial concept and requirements development through design, prototype, integration, verification, and final delivery.
- Lead and support reverse-engineering, sustainment, redesign, and modernization efforts involving legacy electronic hardware and software systems.
- Serve as a primary technical interface with customers, program stakeholders, engineering teams, and company leadership.
- Monitor technical progress, identify engineering risks and issues, and develop mitigation strategies to maintain project objectives.
- Partner with program leadership to ensure technical activities remain aligned with scope, schedule, cost, and customer requirements.
- Lead technical reviews, design reviews, troubleshooting efforts, and engineering decision-making.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of engineering documentation, requirements, technical data, and configuration-controlled information.
- Support system-level integration, troubleshooting, verification, validation, and qualification activities.
- Promote strong engineering practices and collaboration across multidisciplinary project teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering or technical discipline.
- 7+ years of engineering experience supporting embedded systems, electronic systems, aerospace, defense, or similarly complex technical environments.
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams, technical projects, or significant engineering workstreams.
- Strong understanding of systems engineering, system integration, and engineering lifecycle processes.
- Experience translating customer or system-level requirements into engineering plans and technical solutions.
- Experience coordinating requirements development, engineering planning, system design, integration, and technical execution.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate issues across multiple engineering disciplines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with engineers, customers, program leadership, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance.
- Experience designing, developing, integrating, or supporting rugged military-grade electronic systems.
- Experience with embedded computing platforms, embedded electronics, or automated test equipment (ATE).
- Background supporting Department of Defense, military, aerospace, or other mission-critical systems.
- Experience with reverse engineering, obsolescence management, sustainment, redesign, or modernization of legacy hardware and software systems.
- Familiarity with applicable DoD and military standards, environmental qualification requirements, and defense engineering processes.
- Experience with system-level verification, validation, integration, and qualification testing.
- Familiarity with requirements management, configuration management, risk management, and engineering change-control tools and processes.
