Senior Principal C++ Software Engineer / Simulation SME Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Principal C++ Software Engineer and Simulation Subject Matter Expert (SME) with a minimum of 15 years of experience within the Modeling, Simulation, and Training (MS&T) industry. This individual will serve as a technical authority responsible for the architecture, design, development, and strategic direction of advanced simulation systems supporting defense, training, operational analysis, and mission rehearsal environments.

The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in simulation architectures, real-time systems, distributed simulation technologies, and high-performance C++ development. This role requires an industry-recognized expert capable of providing technical leadership across multiple programs, mentoring engineering teams, influencing customer solutions, and serving as a trusted advisor to government and industry stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for modeling and simulation software development efforts.
  • Lead the architecture, design, and development of complex simulation and training systems utilizing modern C++.
  • Define technical roadmaps, software architecture strategies, and long-term platform evolution initiatives.
  • Provide technical leadership across multiple engineering disciplines including software, systems, hardware, integration, and test teams.
  • Translate operational requirements and customer needs into scalable, high-performance simulation solutions.
  • Guide system design decisions impacting performance, scalability, interoperability, and maintainability.
  • Lead technical reviews, architecture assessments, code reviews, and design evaluations.
  • Mentor and develop senior, mid-level, and junior engineers while promoting engineering best practices.
  • Support proposal development, technology demonstrations, technical interchange meetings, and customer engagements.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to government customers, program leadership, and industry partners on simulation technologies and solutions.
  • Lead integration, verification, validation, and accreditation activities for simulation systems.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and industry standards to drive innovation and competitive advantage.
  • Support domestic and international travel for customer engagements, demonstrations, testing, and fielding activities.
Technical Responsibilities
  • Architect, develop, test, and maintain large-scale modeling and simulation applications using modern C++.
  • Design advanced simulation frameworks supporting real-time, constructive, virtual, and live training environments.
  • Develop and optimize complex simulation models, behaviors, entity interactions, and synthetic environments.
  • Implement advanced multithreading, concurrency, and distributed processing solutions.
  • Lead performance optimization efforts across CPU, GPU, networking, and memory subsystems.
  • Design interoperable simulation solutions leveraging industry standards including HLA, DIS, TENA, and related protocols.
  • Support integration with training systems, command and control systems, hardware interfaces, and operational environments.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and resolution of complex software, performance, and integration issues.
  • Develop automated testing, validation, and verification frameworks to ensure simulation fidelity and system reliability.
  • Guide software modernization efforts and migration strategies for legacy simulation platforms.
  • Establish software development standards, coding practices, and architecture governance processes.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience within the Modeling, Simulation, and Training (MS&T) industry.
  • Minimum 15 years of hands-on C++ software development experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise designing and developing large-scale simulation systems supporting defense, training, mission rehearsal, or operational analysis environments.
  • Deep knowledge of simulation architectures, distributed simulation environments, and interoperability standards.
  • Expert-level proficiency in modern C++ including templates, memory management, STL, concurrency, and performance optimization.
  • Extensive experience with multithreaded, real-time, and high-performance software architectures.
  • Proven ability to lead technical teams and influence engineering decisions across multiple programs.
  • Experience interfacing directly with government customers, senior leadership, and external stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, system engineering principles, and lifecycle management.
  • Experience with Agile, DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Exceptional analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Modeling & Simulation, or related field.
  • Experience supporting U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Joint simulation and training programs.
  • Expertise with HLA, DIS, TENA, OneSAF, JSAF, VBS, Unreal Engine, Unity, or similar simulation frameworks.
  • Experience with Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) training environments.
  • Experience with digital engineering, digital twins, synthetic environments, or operational analysis systems.
  • Background in High Performance Computing (HPC), GPU acceleration, cloud-based simulation, or distributed computing architectures.
  • Prior experience serving as a Chief Engineer, Technical Director, Lead Architect, or recognized Simulation SME.
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance or ability to obtain and maintain one.
