Job Description
Role Summary
Provide technical and organizational leadership for electro-mechanical engineering teams responsible for the design, packaging, and structural analysis of complex aerospace and defense training systems. Oversee the mechanical hardware lifecycle from conceptual design through environmental qualification, ensuring compliance with MIL-STD-810, RTCA DO-160, and applicable Design Assurance Level (DAL) requirements. Manage resources, budgets, schedules, and earned value performance while mentoring engineering staff and driving technical excellence across mechanical assemblies, thermal management, and electrically integrated hardware.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Key Responsibilities Engineering Leadership & Team Management

Lead, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical and electro-mechanical engineers across multiple programs.

Manage performance evaluations, professional development plans, and resource allocation to meet program objectives.

Foster a culture of technical rigor, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Design Assurance & Certification Oversight
-
Ensure hardware designs meet assigned Design Assurance Level (DAL) requirements.

Oversee creation, review, and approval of DO-254-related certification artifacts, including:
-
Plan for Hardware Aspects of Certification (PHAC)
-
Hardware Development Plan (HDP)
-
Hardware Accomplishment Summary (HAS)
-

Ensure compliance with applicable aerospace and defense standards throughout the hardware lifecycle.
Mechanical Design, Analysis & Survivability
-
Guide mechanical design strategies for structural integrity, thermal performance, and environmental survivability.

Oversee EMI shielding approaches and coordination with electrical design teams.
-
Ensure hardware designs meet environmental qualification requirements, including shock, vibration, and thermal analysis and testing in accordance with MIL-STD-810 and RTCA DO-160.
Design Reviews & Production Readiness
-
Support Systems Engineering in formal design reviews, including Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR) and Critical Design Reviews (CDR).

Review and approve mechanical drawings, bills of material (BOMs), and manufacturing processes.

Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) to ensure scalability, repeatability, and production readiness.
Program Execution & Earned Value Management
-
Forecast and plan mechanical engineering resource needs across programs.
-
Manage departmental budgets and project schedules to support on-time and on-budget delivery.
-
Plan and track mechanical engineering scope, schedule, and cost performance in alignment with program Integrated Master Schedules (IMS) and budgets.

Support development of work packages, budgets, and estimates to complete (ETC/EAC).
-
Provide earned value inputs, variance analyses, and corrective action plans to Program Management, including CPI and SPI performance drivers.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
-
Partner with Program Management, Systems Engineering, Software, Electrical Engineering, and Manufacturing to align hardware development with system architecture and customer requirements.

Develop and drive technical approaches, processes, and products aligned with Design for Excellence (DFx), including manufacturability, testability, reliability, and serviceability.
